Honorable Mention
Cherry Beach
Bernard Henrie

The Carolinas, Cherry Beach
or maybe Myrtle.
sand enough to park Rhode Island.

My shaved head its own lighthouse,
Made Man: Second Lieutenant,
green as a Robert Frost apple bough.
Viet Nam express, kiss the apple bough
goodbye.

Is that why you found me so easily?

Your first Second Lieutenant dead,
or as dead as it gets. That much
I understood, but it was hard to think
of death with so much white sand
and more girls than you could count,
pretty and clean as the sea itself.

I was happy to be alive, a strolling lion
for a single night in the Carolinas.

Is that why you spoke first?
Your swimsuit covered by a long skirt,
your hair sailing from naked shoulders
with each puff of wind. Your eyes
even then fixed on the Lieutenant bars
rolled almost out of site in my towel.

Is that why you found me so easily?

Receiving all the smiles and whispers
you saved for someone who looked
a lot like me, someone you send letters
and dreams, someone you send love
only for the mail to be returned unopened.

That night, with the sky wild with stars
and clouds touchng the sea front, we kissed.

Oh we kissed like the house was on fire.
